In L.A., I was playing as many live sets as I could. I would play anywhere—coffeehouses, bars and taverns, clubs of all kinds. I had an old Saab that I would drive all over Los Angeles County, sometimes to play a set that lasted only thirty minutes.

One of the great things about L.A. in the 1980s was that the music scene was wide open in terms of genre. I felt liberated from the singer-songwriter and cosmic cowboy scene in Texas. Today you can get a glimpse of my early days in L.A. by looking through old issues of the LA Weekly where you can find my name on the same weekly bill with bands like Jane’s Addiction and X and the Long Ryders and the Blasters at clubs like Raji’s and the Troubadour and McCabe’s and Club Lingerie and the Palomino. That never would have happened in Texas. In L.A. nobody asked or cared what genre you were in, at least not the club managers or the listeners. The record labels, as always, though, were a bit slow to embrace what was happening underground.
